Introducing Yoritam

あるとき、私は気付きました。「もし自分がファッションに興味があるなら、自意識過剰にならずにそれを受け入れるべきだ」と。私はどんなファッションにおいても、実験することが好きです。 西洋以外のファッションに特に興味があります。だから私は日本の着物や、旗袍という中国のドレスを着ます。一番よく着るのは、インドのサリーです。なぜインドなのか説明しようとすると長い話になるのですが、私がインドネシアで過ごした子供時代や、昔の仏教から現代のボリウッドまでの長い歴史を通じたインドネシアにおけるインド文化の存在と関係があります。一言で言うならば、少し異質な感じがすると同時に、不思議と馴染み深さを覚えるのが私にとってのインドです。このように、知っているような知らないような絶妙な既知感にこそ、人間は最も興味を惹かれるのだと思います。今日はインドのブランドのサリーを着ています。実は、日本の仏教寺院や葬式でよく唱えられている般若心経という仏典が書かれているんです。般若心経は、いくつかの仏教宗派の中心的なテキストのひとつです。 私自身はあまり信心深いわけではありませんが、日本で育った人の多くにとっては仏教は子供の頃から身近な存在です。例えば私の祖母はいつも家の仏壇の前で般若心経を唱えていました。 それで、今では私はサリーを現代風に着こなす人達が集まるコミュニティの一員なのですが、ある日私はInstagram上のインド出身の友人がこのサリーを着ているのを見て、とてもびっくりしました。彼女のサリーには漢字が書いてあり、しかもよく見るとそれは般若心経だったのです。それは、Fatherlandというインドのブランドのサリーでした。Fatherlandのラインナップは、ミニマルでありながら洗練されたファッショナブルなサリーばかりです。

At one point, I just kind of told myself, “It’s no good being self-conscious. If I’m interested in fashion, I should just embrace it.” I like to experiment with fashion in general. I’ve also been interested especially in non-Western fashion. So, I wear kimonos; I have a few quipao, a Chinese dress; but, mostly, it’s saris, from India. Why India? It’s kind of a long story, involving a childhood in Indonesia and the strong presence of Indian culture in Indonesia throughout history, from Buddhism to Bollywood. In short, it’s a place that feels a bit alien but strangely familiar to me at the same time. I think that’s the level of unfamiliarity that people find most interesting! [[Today, I’m wearing]] a sari that I got from an Indian brand. It actually has the “Heart Sutra,” a buddhist text (“hannya shingyo,” in Japanese), [[written on it]]. If you go to a buddhist temple or a funeral in Japan, they will chant it. It is one of the central texts in some buddhist sects. I’m not really religious myself, but buddhism is always in the background if you grow up in Japan, and my grandma used to always chant the hannya shingyo at the altar in her house. So, I was looking through Instagram, and I’m part of the sari community there, at people who wear sari . . . in a kind of modern setting as well . . . and adapting it to modern tastes. And I saw one of my Instagram friends wearing a sari, and I was so confused: I saw this kanji text on a sari and then, when I looked closer, it was the Heart Sutra. The brand is called Fatherland; it’s an Indian company. They have a line up of really minimalistic but tasteful and fashionable saris.
