Introducing Shunji

私がTシャツを作り始めた頃、いろんな人が「それ[Please Don’t Throw Your Love Away (PDTYLA)]って何かの歌の歌詞？」と、聞いてきました。ラッパーの名前を挙げる人もいたので、その人たちの楽曲を聞いてみましたが、私には、同じことを言ってるように聞こえました。私のきっかけは、L.A.のダウンタウンを歩いているときに、即興の寸劇や言葉を書き留めることをしていたのですが、「これって自分に関係していることだけど、同時に全ての人に関係するようなものにもなるんじゃないだろうか」って思ったんです。私はそれを試して、人々がどのように反応するか見てみて、PDTYLAのTシャツの写真をインスタにアップし始めたんです。友達はみんな「めっちゃかっこいい」って言ってくれました。「お前がやってることすげぇよ」って。予想外の反応だったので、びっくりしました。私は、ホームレスの人々のことを考えていたんです。でも同時に、自分の友達についても同じ感情を抱きました。私たちは常に移り行く存在です。時に夢や情熱に破れることもあります。そんな時でも、”愛を失って欲しくない”って思うんです。私は、そんなことが自分の友達の身に起きて欲しくないです。私が今やっていることを続けることで、彼らは、私が諦めずに自分の力でやろうとしていることを見ることができます。だから、PDTYLAは愛についてのことだけじゃなくて、希望や夢についてのことでもあるんです。
When I first started printing t-shirts, people would ask me, ‘Is that [[Please Don’t Throw Your Love Away(PDTYLA)]] a lyric from a song?’ Then someone mentioned some rapper, and when I listened to them, I was like, ‘He’s saying the same stuff.’ But what happened was, when I was walking around in downtown L.A., I would do some random skits or put words down, and I thought, ‘That’s something that I can relate to, so it could be something that everyone can relate to.’ I figured that I’d try it and see how people react, so I started posting pictures [[of PDTYLA t-shirts]] on Instagram. And all my friends were like, ‘That’s so cool. What you’re doing is great . . .’ I didn’t expect that kind of feedback. I was thinking about homeless people, but I also didn’t want my friends to ‘throw their love away’–because we change all the time, and sometimes we give up our dreams or passions. I didn’t want that to happen to my friends, too. So, just by doing what I’m doing, they can see me still trying to hustle and to do my own stuff. So PDTYLA is not just about love, but also hopes and dreams.
