Introducing Nik

なんで東京を選んだかって？別に僕はいわゆる「日本オタク」ではなかったんだよ、実際マンガも読んだことなかったし、Jポップも聞いたことなかったしね。でも、昔から僕の中で日本は何かクールな存在だったんだよね。特に日本について何か勉強したことはなかったんだけど、日本っていう国がなんとなくいつも好きだった。だから、日本に来たかったし、国連大学で働くチャンスが現れた時、迷わず手にしたよ。正直に言って、最初は右も左も全くわからなかったんだ。僕はヨーロッパやタンザニアに住んでたこともあったり、結構世界中いろんな場所を巡ってきたけど、日本での最初の1週間は僕にとって人生最大のカルチャーショックだったね。身の回りの全てに恐怖があった。決してそれは悪い意味じゃなかったんだけど。最初の1週間は、すき家やラーメン屋に入るのも怖気付いたよ。でも、次の週には自分で弁当を買う勇気もついたし、その当時西新宿に住んでたんだけど、普通にラーメン屋とかドン・キホーテとか行けるようになったんだ。あとは、どうやって注文するかも理解したよ。それに店員さんも、とても優しかったんだ。

Why did I choose Tokyo? I wasn’t one of those “Japanophiles”–I never read manga or listened to J-pop or whatever. But Japan always seemed like a cool place; I always liked it even though I never studied anything about it. So I always wanted to come here, and when the opportunity to work at the United Nations University came up, I took it. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect. I’d moved around in many places, lived around Europe and Tanzania, but coming to Japan–in that first week–was the biggest culture shock for me. I was super-afraid of everything, but not in a bad way. For the first week, I was afraid to walk into a Sukiya (meat-based, fast-food chainstore) or ramen shop. After a week, I got enough courage to buy my first bento. I lived in Nishi-shinjuku at the time. Slowly, I was able to go to the ramen shop or donkihote. . . and figured out how to order stuff. And the staff were super-nice.
