Introducing Idris

私はジャマイカで生まれ育ち、大学進学の際にアメリカに移りました。ナイジェリアとのハーフですが、アフリカに行ったことはありません。そのようなこともあり常に自分のアイデンティティへの問いかけがあります。私が最初に作ったコラージュは、「研究資料」のようなものでした。私は自分のアイデンティティへの問いかけに答えようとしていました。作品をインスタグラムに載せると、良い反応が得られました。友人にシリーズ化したらどうか？と言われ、ピンときたのです。これが約2年半前のことです。今現在の自分の仕事を説明するならば、アフリカと日本の融合です。浮世絵とアフリカの仮面を融合させ、版画にしています。日本では松本で、そして最近ではジャマイカで展覧会を開催しました。（東京の展覧会はハイブで開催されました。）今年は、さまざまな異なるエッセンスを取り入れて、コラージュをさらに追究していきたいと思います。

So, I was born and raised in Jamaica. Lived in America for college. And I’m also half Nigerian, but I’ve never been to Africa. So the question of identity keeps coming up for me. The first collage I did was more like “research material”: I was trying to answer that question [[about identity]]. When I did it and put it up on Instagram, it got a good response. And a friend of mine asked, “Why don’t you do a series?” That’s when it went “piiing” in my head; and that was about two-and-a-half years ago. How would I describe my work right now? It’s a fusion of African and Japanese. I fuse ukiyo-e with African masks, which I make into prints. I’ve had exhibitions in Matsumoto and, more recently, in Jamaica. [[The Tokyo exhibition took place at The Hive.]] This year, I want to explore collage further by incorporating different influences.
