Introducing Drew

私は、哲学を専攻していた頃に、2つのクラスを受講していました。１つは、「コミュニティワーキング(Community Working Classics)」というもので、2つのグループでボランティアを行うものだったのですが、1つのグループでは刑務所で自由に哲学の授業を展開し、もう1つのグループでは公共の図書館で同様のことをするというものでした。 私のプロジェクトは、図書館の方でした。私は、どうやってより良い人生を送るかということを短編の読み聞かせを通じて考えてもらおうと思いました。また、できる限り図書館におけるいろんな人の役割を、社会におけるそれらに対応するようにということにも気を付けていました。もう１つの授業は、アートの授業で「市民工房(Civic Studio)」というものでした。教授が再開発中の場所にその学期中使用するためのスタジオを借り、そこで私たちはその近くの地域からひらめきやアイデアを感じ取って、クリエイティブな作品造りにとりかからなければなりませんでした。この活動を通じて、近くの図書館の中にある地元の歴史コーナーに深く関わることになりました。私たちは、お店や街の文化、そしてそれらがどのように変化してきたかを観察して、その地域を記念した作品を作りました。このようにして私は、図書館と地元文化に対しての興味を抱いていきました。

During my major in Philosophy, I took two classes—which was “Community Working Classics.” So, we had two groups, and we had to volunteer: one group taught free philosophy classes in prisons, and the other did the same in a public library. My project was in a public library: I was to read short stories to see how to live a better life. So, as far as I could, I reconnected the library’s role to society. I also took an art class, called Civic Studio. The professor would rent studios in locations being redeveloped, which would be the studio for the semester. Every creative work that we made had to be inspired by that immediate locality. And that ended up getting us involved with our local history department in the library. We looked at the shops, the culture of the street, and how they have changed, and we made works celebrating that particular area. That’s how I developed a passion for libraries and local culture.
