Introducing Nina

私を突き動かすものは、思うに「他者」です。私は幸いにも、これまでにたくさんの場所に旅行して、たくさんの人に出会い、世界中の多くの美しい場所を見てきました。だからこそ、孫にも同じような経験をさせてあげたいんです。私が大事にしていることに話を戻すと、私自身の書いたものから旅行から音楽まで、全てが人との交流と、他者との繋がりに要約されると思います。その土地やそこに住む人たちのために物語るということが旅行記の中でとても好きな部分です。また、私の周囲への興味という観点からは全てのことが連関してるといえるでしょう。前に、ある人がこういったんです。「どうせ世界は終わるんだから、知ったこっちゃない。関係ない話だね。」って、それに私はこう返したんです。「あなたはその世界にいないかもしれないけれど、子供や孫は生きている」と。とにかく、私は人々に幸せでいて、そして私たちのこの美しい世界と、つながりあった世界を経験してもらいたいんです。

What inspires me? I think it’s people. I’ve been able to travel so much, meet so many people, and see so many beautiful places in the world that I don’t want our grandchildren to be unable to experience those things as well. And going back to what do I care about—everything from my writing to travelling to music—all that I do boils down to human interaction and connecting with others. My favourite part about travel writing is storytelling for others, for locals and local places. And going back to my interest in the environment—all those things are interconnected. And I’ve had these conversations with others who may say, “Well, the world is gonna die anyway, so it doesn’t matter.” But I say, “Well, you may not be around, but your kids or grandkids will.” Anyway, I just want people to be happy, to experience our beautiful world, and to experience all those things with each other.
