東京とパラオはどこが違うか？そうですね。すごく記憶に残ってるのは、大学の研究室から外を眺めて、ただビルが立ち並んだ景色が目に入って、このたくさんのビルの中にいる人々やもののことを考えたことですね。そういえば最近帰省したんですけど、パラオではビーチでただぼーっと海だけを眺めて、その深さや何マイルも続く水平線のかなたに思いを馳せることができます。帰省するときはいつもパラオが東京とどう異なるか考えています。東京で唯一好きなところは、「アノニミティ（匿名性）」ですね。パラオではいつも自転車でいろんなところに行ってて、それをみんないつも見ているので「シュウィン」というバイクのメーカーのあだ名で呼ばれてるんです。パラオでは、東京に存在する「アノニミティ（匿名性）」はないですね。何と言ってもコミュニティが小さいですから。

How does Tokyo differ from Palau? I remember looking out of my college lab in Tokyo and seeing nothing but buildings, and thinking about all the people and things in the buildings. In Palau, where I went back to recently, you go to the beach, look out, and see nothing but ocean–and you think about how deep it is, and how there is nothing for miles and miles. I always think about that when I go back, and how different it is to Tokyo. But one thing I like about Tokyo is the anonymity. In Palau, I got the nickname “Schwinn,” because I would always ride my bike–which is a Schwinn brand–to work, and everybody sees me. And they started calling me “Schwinn.” So the kind of anonymity you get in Tokyo doesn’t exist in Palau, because it’s so small.
