Introducing Christine

（自身の漫画をどのように説明しますか？）それぞれが独自の物語となっています。何かに分類しようとするならば、いわば「日常の何気ない一幕(“slice of life”)」を切り取ったような漫画だと思います。私は長く壮大な物語を語ろうとはしていません。自分自身の人生で経験した1つの経験を伝えようとしています。そして、私はできるだけ正直に伝えようと努めています。これが私の経験したことで、見たもので、したことで、といったようにありのままに紙に描きつけました。（なぜ漫画ですか？）私はいつも漫画が好きでした。多くの人が私に、アニメや漫画が好きか、それが理由で漫画を描き始めたのかと尋ねます。しかし、実際にはそういった理由ではありません。私の母は日本人なのですが、彼女は私が子供の頃アニメや漫画を見させてくれませんでした。（笑）だから、私は漫画やアニメを読んだり観たりすることができませんでした。しかし、私はグラフィックノベルなどを読み始め、アーティストがどれほど多様であるかを目の当たりにしました。漫画はただたくさんのボックスに書き込んでいくだけのものだと思っている人も多いと思います。しかし、例えばボックスをまったく使用していないグラフィックアーティストはいますし、彼女/彼らは非常にクールなイラストを表現します。私はそれがいつも好きでした。そして、私はまだ若い頃に、「大きくなったらこういうことがしたいな」という風に思ったんだと思います。

[[How would she describe her comics?]]: Each one is its own story. If I ever had to categorize it, I would say it’s a “slice of life” comic, as people say, which is like . . . I’m not trying to tell this long, grand story; I’m trying to tell this one experience that I’ve had in my life. And I just try to be as honest as possible with it. I dunno: I’m just like, “Here’s what I experienced; and here’s what I saw; and here’s what I did,” and I just put it out on paper.” [[Why comics?]]: I’ve always liked comics. I mean, a lot of people ask me [[if I always]] liked anime and manga, and if that’s why I started drawing comics. But, actually, that’s not why. My mother, who is Japanese, wouldn’t let us watch anime and manga when we were children (laughs). So, I couldn’t read or watch those things. But I started reading graphic novels and such, and I saw how diverse the artists [[that do that]] can be. I think that a lot of people think that comics are just “box, box, box, box, box” and, like, fill in the boxes. But you can see graphic artists that don’t use the box at all, [[and yet]] they have cool illustrations. I always loved that. And I think I thought, when I was younger, “Ooo, that’s what I want to do when I’m older.”
